The Medical Student Prayer

Jonathan David York

I am praying for your help, O’ Lord. I am praying that you will help me help others.

Lord, give me:

STRENGTH, so that I may shoulder the burden of the responsibility of my duties;

PASSION, so that I may radiate excitement in all that I do;

INTEGRITY, so that my character will remain as pure as my new white coat;

SYMPATHY, so that my patients never feel alone;

CONFIDENCE, so that I may ardently pursue my chosen destiny; and

HUMILITY, so that none ever suffer for my arrogance.

But most importantly, give me:
REVERENCE towards this astonishing opportunity, so that I may never forget how fortunate I am to be here!

I pray for the ability to seek these ideals, O’ Lord.

Your weak, tired, wretchedly impure, aloof, insecure, high-handed, and unappreciative patient;

Me.

Personal Philosophy on Life: Just smile. It always makes you feel better, and you'd be surprised how far that simple act will take you in any endeavor.

Favorite Quote: Varies from month to month. This one has always been a perennial favorite:

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”
