Sacred Messenger

Tuere Hightower-Hughes

S-A-C-R-E-D
That’s what my name means
It’s what embodies me
I am sacred and I am a messenger
My wisdom speaks ten fold
And though my physical presence may be subtle
Trust that my message is bold
African is my name but Costa Rican is my blood
America is my country so in diversity’s wake I hug
Been from west coast to east coast
South towns to doing the Midwest swing
Barely stepped foot out of this country
But still learned many things
My voice speaks what I know and what my heart believes in
It speaks what flows inside my head and what my soul is breathing
My voice misses her little brother who was much too young to die
My voice won’t settle for less and will fly as far as it can glide
My voice loves a man so sweet in all his divinities
So pure in all his doings and so fine in the ways he’s loving me
My voice is the song of a young black girl
Who wants to take this world and fly

Fly away from the continuous wars
Started on the premise that another country might have some weapons
But we weren’t sure and never found any evidence
But they must’ve done something wrong, right?
So the war wages on and continues the fight
Killing soldier after soldier
And innocent men, women, and children in its wake
And all this killing for freedom’s sake?

Fly away from the men battering their wives
Fighting with words and fighting with knives
Yet the woman stays and in her self pity
All she can say is “but he still loves me”

Fly away from the teenagers willing to do anything to revive
Even shoot down innocent people or take their own lives
Because they couldn’t handle it when the road got tough
And their mothers and fathers never loved them enough

I want to spread my wings and fly, just fly
To a place where I can look up in the sky and smile
Where I can dance with the winds
Plant seeds into the earth
So they can grow into beauty, into spirit and into joyful bliss
And I can’t wait to see a day like this
Tuere Akua, sacred messenger is me
My message is sweet, my message flies free
Pure and sweet in freedom’s flight like the untainted dove
My message is one word . . .
My message is . . . “LOVE”

Personal Philosophy on Life and/or Medicine: The only thing worth living for is love. Love for your family, friends and significant other, for those leisurely things you love to do, and for your contribution to this world and this lifetime. We each can contribute in our own way. I feel that my contribution lies in providing a service, health care and beyond, to those most in need. Those who cannot afford, cannot access, are unknowledgeable about, or feel they cannot trust the current healthcare system. Fulfilling this niche and having love in my life are what will truly make me happy.
