Haamataraa Api (A New Beginning)

Jonathan Tovey

I roto i to matou mau tere na nia i te Moana Nui a Hiva
Ua ite au i te hoe fenua rahi
Te fenua parauhia ra
Ua ite hoi au i te mau taata hurue e te ta’ere hurue
Ua mihi nei tou mafatu no to’u mau fetii e to’u mau tupuna,
E to’u ai’a, te fenua Vaihi
Te ta’i no te mau manu na nia i te ra’i
Te mau arenui na nia i te one
Te mata’i i roto i te mau tumu raau
Te ra na muri a vau
Te taata e to ratou aroha
O tou mafatu, eiaha e riaria
Te hoe haamataraa api teie nei
Te hoe mahana api no te hau e te haapiiraa

In our travels upon the great ocean of Hiva (Pacific Ocean)
I saw a great land
A land of promise
I saw different people here, and cultures foreign to me
My heart called to my family and my ancestors
And to my homeland, Hawai’i
The cry of the birds in the heavens
The surf on the sandy beaches
The wind in the trees
The sun on my back
The people and the aloha spirit
Oh my heart, be not troubled!
A new beginning is here
A new day of peace and learning
