Photos from El Sur

These two photos were taken in Spring ’07 when I was backpacking in South America. It seemed like every five feet there was a picture waiting to be taken.

This picture depicts a bullfight my travel mates and I stumbled upon as we adventured through the Ecuadorian Andes. It was taken in a town called Zumbahua, during the festival of Corpus Christi. For many of the town’s residents, this festival is the highlight of their year.  After about a dozen bulls were teased with the capote (cape)—but not injured or killed—the festivities would endure until the early hours. Not captured by any tour book, this was an event we felt blessed to be a part of.

The woman shown here was like so many others in La Paz, Bolivia—her garb was traditional and commonly seen throughout the country. The colorful wrap around her shoulders was used to carry her baby. And like many things in Bolivia, it looked simple but was sturdy and built to last.
