OUTREACH SERVICES ACCOMPLISHMENTS

1999-2000 marked the first full year of integration of the Northwest Area Health Education Center Library Network into the Carpenter Library as part of Outreach Services.

Acquired MD Consult, an online resource designed to answer clinical questions quickly and serve as a reference for staying up-to-date in medicine, and made it available to the Medical Center. As of 30 June 2000, there were 486 registered users.

Reorganized document delivery service throughout the Carpenter Library/NWAHEC Network in order to streamline operations. The Table of Contents (TOC) service, a popular service, has been fully integrated and restructured. TOC renewals were completed and a subscriber database constructed.

Established, in cooperation with the Office of Rural Physician Continuing Education (ORPCE), a pilot program to assist WFUSM preceptors with access and use of knowledge-based resources. A needs assessment was conducted. With funds made available from ORPCE, computers were installed in physician/preceptor offices. Placement of computers was followed by a visit from a librarian with a Lunch & Learn session demonstrating the available resources. This program was introduced as a pilot in the Winston-Salem area. In May, the program was extended to preceptors throughout the 17 Northwest AHEC counties.

Working with the Women’s Health Center of Excellence Continuing Medical Education subcommittee, electronic resources related to the topics featured in each of the quarterly programs were made available to CME students via the Office of Continuing Education and Women’s Health websites. A librarian worked closely with the CME faculty on this project.

Implemented the Minolta EPIC 2000 planetary scanner and ARIEL software, which enables the delivery of documents directly to the desktop.

PUBLIC SERVICES ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Inaugurated a proxy server to provide access from home to all of the Library’s online resources. Proxy server instructions and a registration form were placed on the Library’s web site.

Eliminated the need for user ids and passwords within the Medical Center.

Created a new look for the Library’s web site. Pam Cabe and Alex Norwood designed the new look, reorganized existing materials, and added digital pictures. As part of the new web site design, three areas were created highlighting services of interest to health professionals, students, and the community at large.

Developed and presented 30-minute refreshers for Library staff on various databases and resources that were relatively new. Topics included: OCLC, ThinkPads, NCLIVE, FirstSearch, EbscoHost, ProQuest, EbscoNet, Micromedex, Consumer Health web site, PsycINFO, PubMed, Doody’s, and Document Delivery’s web forms. Sessions were held on various Wednesdays with two presentations per week.

Contributed to the development of the new medical curriculum through library representation on the school’s Medical Informatics Committee, weekly attendance at Internal Medicine’s Morning Report, and in consultation with the instructors of the second year Pop/Epi course.

Introduced the web version of the Micromedex databases and made the drug information databases available, for the first time, to every department in the Medical Center via the Medical Center’s intranet page. Information Services agreed to take over supervision of the databases and to absorb some of the subscription costs.

Collected seven cases of food during Circulation’s annual Food for Fines program during the month of December for the Food Bank of NorthWest North Carolina.

Circulation added a new cash register and credit card machine.

TECHNICAL SERVICES ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Completed needs analysis of the cataloging service, especially WFUBMC departmental and NWAHEC cataloging. Several new policies were established related to departmental cataloging. A NWAHEC library assistant will now do the NWAHEC cataloging.

Reorganized cataloging department in order to allow more time for Voyager development. The Cataloging Assistant will assume full responsibility for Carpenter Library cataloging. The Associate Director for Technical Services and the Acquisitions Librarian will help as needed. This will leave more time for the Technical Services Librarian to work on special projects and Voyager development.

Increased electronic journal access from approximately 150 to over 400 titles by adding Springer-Verlag Link titles, all AMA titles, Ebsco Online titles, and more.

Added 40 electronic textbooks (for a total of 55) including those through MD Consult and Books@OVID.

Near completion of migration of Faculty Publications database from the Cuadra Star system to the Voyager system.

The Dorothy Carpenter Medical Archives acquired new Marantz recording equipment for the oral history program. Oral Histories completed: Graham Pittman, Hal Pittman, William Hazzard, Moseley Waite, Diane Mitchell, Robert Rose, and Stephen Richardson.

The Archives participated in the Physician’s Art Exhibit at Duke University; a book was produced from this exhibit and copies were presented to the Archives.

Due to the phasing out of the Cuadra Star system, the Archives database was migrated to a new system called PastPerfect. This system has many features that enhance archival materials.
